This celebrated feature by director Radu Jude (Aferim!, and the recent award-winning ‘I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians’), is a caustic and compelling black comedy of family strife.

Recently divorced Marius plans to take his young daughter away on a weekend holiday. When things do not go as planned, he strikes out at those around him, and what began as comic drama soon turns bitter as Marius' increasingly erratic behaviour and morbid self-pity send the film spinning headlong into much darker territory.

A key work of the Romanian New Wave, Jude's pressure-cooker drama is an unflinching, sometimes uncomfortable and often hilariously profane portrait of one man's disintegrating mental health as his life and relationships crumble about him.

This world-premiere, region-free Blu-ray edition includes a new filmed interview with director Radu Jude as well as two of his acclaimed short films: The Tube with a Hat (2006) and Alexandra (2007), plus a 16-page booklet featuring a new essay by journalist and critic Carmen Gray.

Appreciation

2012 Sarajevo Film Festival / Winner: Best Film
2012 CinEast Film Festival / Winner: Grand Prix

“Tense and unnerving to the point of near complete exhaustion, this chaotic, yet endearing comedy chamber piece makes for compulsive viewing… a car crash of social taboos and kitchen sink drama with an unrelenting energy and panache” Patrick Gamble, CineVue

“A masterwork of black comedy and suspense”
Indie Wire

“A violent, funny and disconcerting vision of a familial argument turned into actual slugfest”
Michał Oleszczyk, Chicago Sun-Times

"This bitterly ironic and intelligently choreographed drama; Marius’ erratic movements beautifully illustrate his state of confusion. He turns from victim to aggressor, and the scene of this sudden transition displays both raw energy and directorial mastery" Film Society of Lincoln Center

"Shot in real time and set mostly in one location, Radu Jude's third feature film is a dangerous, claustrophobic tale that sets the bar high for contemporary Romanian cinema"
AFI Fest
