From the director of The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On, Kazuo Hara’s intensely personal film is a radical and challenging examination of the interplay between the film’s subject and the director. In order to maintain contact with his former partner, Miyuki, Hara shot this raw, intimate film as a way to remain connected with her and to make sense of their complex relationship.

Voyeuristic and uncompromising, Extreme Private Eros explodes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking. It creates a shockingly candid portrait of an independent woman living on her own terms, and Hara’s personal struggle to accept her rejection of him.

Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 is presented from a new HD transfer, approved by director Kazuo Hara. This edition also includes a rare masterclass/interview with Hara, a new filmed appreciation by author and film critic Chris Fujiwara, and a booklet with new writing by author and critic Tony Rayns, and an essay by film writer Ela Bittencourt.

Appreciation

“An undiscovered genius of documentary”
Errol Morris

“Without question, [Hara's] most outrageous, personal and masochistic work... This insanely intimate document never flinches... an emotionally scalding yet absorbing cinematic open wound”
Steven Puchalski, Shock Cinema

“Extreme Private Eros proves to be an unexpectedly humanist, even feminist film as it chronicles Miyuki Takeda’s later relationships with other women and black American GIs in the low-rent, gutter-tough world of Okinawa go-go bars.[…]
Hara’s transgressive ethos remains in effect: The truth hurts”

Ed Halter, The Village Voice

“If you’re going to use your camera to interrogate the world, perhaps it’s only fair to let the world interrogate you by means of your own camera. Kazuo Hara’s second documentary is about as personal as its possible to get – a detached, rational examination of the interplay between the director and his subject who happens to be his former lover and the mother of his child... Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 is both a tiny snapshot of a nation in flux, and a timeless exploration of the end of love Windows on Worlds

“This impossibly private documentary... Shockingly provocative and at times masochistic, the film exposes the rawest of emotions as the filmmaker confronts his own love life and the world around himExtreme Private Ethos

“Few films in the history of cinema live up to their title quite like Extreme Private Eros. Again, idk what this is. Don't ask. Leave me alone. Whatever it is, it's singular. It's a rare gem. And I cannot recommend witnessing it for yourself strongly enough” 'Sin', Letterboxd

“Even in this era of reality television and docu-fiction, only rarely has a filmmaker turned the camera upon their own private life with such candor and intimacy as Kazuo Hara in the aptly named Extreme Private Eros” Harvard Film Archive
